Our meeting locations vary: as our name states, we are BWI of Greater Boston which encompasses a very large area! We are ALWAYS looking for new places to hold meetings. Many times it doesn’t pan out, due to scheduling constraints, our (very limited) space rental budget, and restrictions venues may have. The behind the scenes effort to find suitable locations is great and we appreciate any help our members can give us in this department. Our most frequent location of late has been in Arlington, because the church where we meet is always available (and generously offers us the space for free!) . We're really excited that our next Weekday meeting will be on the South Shore, at the Thayer Library in Braintree---if you are in the area, come say hi!
At all meetings, library returns happen first thing. Therefore, if you borrowed a carrier, please come to the beginning of the meeting to return it. This is important because we only have one of many types of carriers and need them returned early so that others can try them on. If you can’t make a meeting, or have a question about returns you can always email email@example.com and we will help you work something out.
There is no way we can have enough carriers of each brand to satisfy everyone. We have a very diverse library, and the point is so show you what is available on the market and give you some instruction on how to use them safely. If there is a particular carrier you would like to bring home, we do allow reserves: If it is out on the tables and doesn’t have a tag already, you can go to the librarian, fill out the required paperwork, leave your deposit and reserve the carrier. We then ask that you leave it on the table for others to look at and try on during the meeting, but at the end of the meeting it is yours to take it home. Take a look at our registration page for our library checkout policy, and if you are planning to check something out (and haven't ever checked something out from us before) please pre-register. (If you are a member or have checked something out before, we already should have your contact information on file).
Our biggest and most popular meetings are our "weekday" meeting, generally on the third Wednesday of the month from 10-12pm. You do not have to come at 10 and stay for two hours. You are more than welcome to drop in anytime (unless you are returning a borrowed carrier, of course, but even then you don't have to stay!).
This year, we have a FSOT table at each meeting. Sometimes we have a few, sometimes a lot, others times none so it all depends. (Often, but not always, we have the FSOT items that we are destashing from the library.) You can also post to our FB social group regarding any FSOT and to let people know you might be bringing a particular carrier to a meeting.
There are two times we ask people to take a break from talking and give us your attention. A little bit after the start of the meeting we do our safety/101 talk. It is a general overview of the types of carriers and some of the common safety points. We get lots of new people at meetings each month and this is helpful for people to know where they might want to spend their time trying things on and as a reminder to everyone about the most critical points of babywearing safety.
The second is a little more fun: at 11 we have our discussion topic. This is 10-15 minutes of someone speaking about a topic of interest such as Winter Babywearing, Summer Babywearing, Newborn Babywearing and DIY carriers. The topics are different each meeting and are posted on our website and FB page in advance. So if you don’t need the safety talk or much help with carriers anymore you can still come, learn something new, and socialize!
This is the meeting that generally has the most leaders. We try to wear our blue shirts so you can tell who is who and do a quick introduction at the start of the 101 talk. You will also see that most of us have our children with us so there are lots of littles running around. We are all parents and you will find sometimes when are you being helped we might need to step away for a moment to feed/change a child or deal with an injury. We appreciate your understanding and please feel free to do the same. Babies get hungry and need diaper changes and we completely understand if you need to step away and take a minute, too!
Our organization is ever-changing. We are always trying to find the best way to help other parents so things change during the year. We are currently trying to implement Membership cards to make carrier check outs easier, faster, and less error-prone. The reservation system is pretty new, too, and seems to be working well. We are always open to suggestions and if you have an issue, please let us know so we can address it.
